“Exercise and I are not compatible. Especially waking at 6am to exercise at 6.30am!

Well that was what I thought until my brother, Christian, booked himself, our business partner Peter and I into training with Stanley at Urban Fitness Solutions. At the start of our training, Stanley was mindful of the fact that we had not consistently exercised for at least 15 years. We were very unfit and over-weight and entering our forties. We started training 2 times a week and then once fit enough Stanley encouraged us to train with or without him for a 3rd day.

Stanley’s knowledge of exercise, techniques for each exercise and attitude towards helping his clients achieve better health and fitness results made it easier for us to continue training to a point where we now notice the differences in our bodies, health and fitness levels.

“Prior to that, I had trained on and off with a number of gym-based personal trainers and participated in “Boot Camps” as I sought to return to my earlier fitness levels.

The reasons for my longevity with Urban Fitness Solutions can be summarised as follows:

1. Knowledge
It is important to me that the trainers know what they are doing, and can demonstrate that knowledge through their own fitness levels. I want a fitness “role model” who can walk the talk. They also know the difference between latest research and “fads”.

2. Experience
Often a person is limited only by their own preconceived perceptions of what they can achieve and it is important to have an experienced trainer who can recognise the difference between this and genuine fatigue and provide the support necessary to break through such plateaus.

3. Honesty and reliability
It is important that you can trust the trainer to always have your best interests at heart, and to always be your trainer first and your friend second. This is especially important when you are in the “red zone” and you need to try and override your body’s decision to ignore their urging and to stop lifting/running.

4. Variety
When I train with weights, the program changes every 2 months. This provides me with a much needed mental break (as well as a physical one) and is really effective in me achieving short term goals.

5. Fun / enthusiasm
The trainers enjoy what they do and their enthusiasm is infectious. Working out in this environment always makes for a more productive work-out. I often go into the office after a session absolutely buzzing.

6. Support
If I have a question about anything, someone usually knows the answer. If I’m running in a race, the programs are adapted to complement my outside commitments.

And the proof? Over the last 8 years I have dropped 11kgs in weight whilst gaining muscle mass. I can perform weighted chin-ups and dips and can bench press my own body weight.”
